Obtaining a Private Pilot License (PPL) involves several mandatory steps. With the below outline SG Flight School will make them as easy as possible.
1. Obtain an FAA Medical Certificate
This may take months for the FAA to review and approve. Once you’ve decided to begin your flying journey, this should be your first step. Don’t be scared, the examination is just to make sure you are healthy to fly. Click Here to see what the FFA is Looking for.
Step 1: Schedule an examination with an FAA-authorized Aviation Medical Examiner (AME).
Click Here to find a list of AME’s in your area.
Step 2: Go to: FAA MedXPress and request an account.
This documentation and MID will be required by your AME.
You will need a minimum of a Third-Class Medical Certificate.
Or a Recreational Pilot Certificate but this comes with some flying restrictions.
For questions about what certificate is right for you please ask your instructor.
Step 3: Wait for the results of your exam.
You can begin Ground and Flight Training while waiting.
2. Choose a Flight School
Step 1: Contact SG Flight School to answer your questions and begin flight training.
Considerations: Look for schools with experienced instructors, well-maintained aircraft, and a good safety record.
3. Start Ground School
Begin ground school, where you’ll learn the theoretical aspects of flying, such as aerodynamics, weather, navigation, and FAA regulations.
Step 1: Find the Ground School that’s best for you.
You can do your ground school with your SG Flight School Instructor.
This is the most costly method, but you will be assured to get the best understanding of the course material.
Find an online, at your own pace, flight school.
4. Begin Flight Training
Step 1: Start flight lessons with your SG Flight School Certified Flight Instructor (CFI).
Flight Hours: You’ll need a minimum of 40 flight hours, including 20 hours with an instructor and 10 hours of solo flight.
Skills Learned: You’ll practice takeoffs, landings, navigation, emergency procedures, and cross-country flying.
Logbook: Keep a detailed logbook of all flight hours and training activities.
5. Pass the FAA Knowledge Test
Step: Schedule and take the FAA Knowledge Test.
Your SG Flight School instructor will help you with this process
Content: The test consists of 60 multiple-choice questions covering topics learned in ground school.
Preparation: Use practice exams and study materials provided by your ground school.
6. Complete Solo Flight Requirements
Step: After adequate training, your SG Flight School instructor will endorse you to fly solo.
7. Pass the FAA Checkride
Step: Once you’ve completed all training and logged the required hours, your instructor will endorse you for the FAA checkride.
Components: The checkride includes an oral exam and a practical flight test conducted by an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE).
Preparation: Review all knowledge areas and practice flight maneuvers to ensure proficiency.
Outcome: Successfully passing the checkride earns you your Private Pilot License.
8. Obtain Your Private Pilot License
Step: After passing the checkride, your DPE will issue you a temporary PPL.
Permanent License: The FAA will mail you your permanent license within a few weeks.
Privileges: With a PPL, you can fly as Pilot in Command (PIC) of a single-engine aircraft, carry passengers, and share flight expenses.
Following these steps carefully will guide you through the process of becoming a licensed private pilot. Your instructor will be happy to help every step of the way.
