Towered versus untowered training

Chandler Municipal (KCHD) is a good airport and it's closer to you. The meaningful difference is that it's untowered, and Falcon Field is towered.

Pilots trained entirely at untowered fields are often uneasy the first time they have to work a control tower — the radio work is unfamiliar, and it tends to show up exactly when they want to fly somewhere interesting. Training at a towered field from day one inverts that. You'll be talking to Falcon Tower on your earliest lessons, and towered airports will feel routine by the time you're flying cross-country.

None of which makes untowered flying unimportant — you'll learn that too, at the quieter fields nearby. The point is getting both, with the harder one becoming second nature first.

Getting here from Chandler

Loop 101 Price north to the Red Mountain 202 east, then out toward Greenfield or Higley. It's a real drive, and worth being realistic about: if you're flying twice a week, that's a commitment. Plenty of our students make it, but factor it in honestly before you start.

What training costs

A $199 discovery flight is the sensible first step. You'll fly the airplane yourself, and you'll know quickly whether the drive from Chandler is one you want to make regularly.
